Tube anemones are fascinating invertebrates belonging to the group Ceriantharia, relatives of true sea anemones. In nature they live buried in soft sand where they build a protective tube beneath the substrate, extending only their long flowing tentacles into the water column to capture plankton and small prey. When disturbed, the entire animal can rapidly withdraw into its tube for protection.

Tube anemones are non-photosynthetic and rely on feeding rather than light for nutrition. They also possess a powerful sting and should be given plenty of space from other corals and small livestock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are tube anemones reef-safe?
Use caution — they have a powerful sting and should be given generous space from corals and small livestock. In a spacious setup with thoughtful placement they're spectacular.
What substrate does a tube anemone need?
A sand bed at least 3" deep so it can bury its protective tube, extending its ~6" crown of tentacles above the sand.
Do tube anemones need light?
No — they're non-photosynthetic. Feed small meaty foods like mysis shrimp or chopped seafood with target feedings.
What exactly will I receive?
The exact specimen in the photos (WYSIWYG), shipped Express Monday or Tuesday in insulated packaging.
