The Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) is one of the most iconic carnivorous plants in the world, using hinged traps to capture prey in nutrient-poor wetland habitats. Typical-form plants are vigorous, classic flytraps that develop their best color and strongest growth under full sun and with a proper winter dormancy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What water should I use for a Venus flytrap?
Only distilled, rain, or reverse-osmosis water. Tap and mineral water contain dissolved minerals that will slowly kill carnivorous plants.
Does a Venus flytrap need winter dormancy?
Yes. Flytraps need a cool winter rest with reduced watering — growth slows and some traps die back, which is normal. They rebound vigorously in spring.
Should I feed my Venus flytrap?
If grown outdoors it catches plenty on its own. Indoors, offer small live insects occasionally — never feed it meat or fertilize the soil.
Can I grow a Venus flytrap indoors?
They do best in full sun outdoors but can grow under bright full-spectrum LEDs. A sunny windowsill alone is usually not enough light for strong color and traps.
