Live Sphagnum Moss Care Guide
Share
Live sphagnum moss is the living layer of a natural bog. It holds moisture, keeps the soil surface acidic, and creates the humid microclimate many carnivorous plants love. Grown on top of pots or in terrariums, it adds a lush, natural look and tells you at a glance whether conditions are right.
Water
Use distilled, reverse osmosis, or rain water only. Sphagnum is very sensitive to dissolved minerals, and tap water will slowly kill it. Keep it consistently moist. Once live sphagnum dries out completely, it often turns white and doesn't recover.
Light
Bright light keeps sphagnum compact and growing. Partial sun or a full-spectrum LED works well. Red sphagnum develops its strongest red and burgundy color in brighter light, while green sphagnum tolerates a bit less.
Humidity and temperature
Sphagnum grows fastest in humid conditions, such as terrariums, trays of carnivorous plants, or a greenhouse. It prefers moderate temperatures, roughly 50 to 85°F, and can struggle in prolonged extreme heat.
Using it as a top dressing
Lay live sphagnum on the soil surface around your plants and press it gently so it stays in contact with the moist soil below. It helps keep the surface wet, discourages some algae, and gives pots a natural bog look. Fast-growing sphagnum can eventually overgrow small plants like young sundews or butterworts, so trim it back as needed.
Growing more
Sphagnum is easy to propagate. The growing tip of each strand, called the capitulum, can start a new plant. Chop live strands into small pieces, scatter them over moist peat or sphagnum, and keep them wet, humid, and bright. New growth usually appears within a few weeks.

FAQ
Why is my live sphagnum turning white or brown?
The most common causes are drying out, minerals in the water, or not enough light. Keep it consistently wet with distilled, RO, or rain water and give it bright light.
Can I grow live sphagnum in a terrarium?
Yes. Terrariums are ideal because they hold the humidity sphagnum loves. Make sure it still gets good light.
Will live sphagnum take over my pots?
It can, especially in humid, bright conditions. That's usually a sign it's happy. Trim it back so it doesn't smother small plants.
Is live sphagnum the same as dried sphagnum?
No. Dried long-fiber sphagnum is used as a potting medium and doesn't grow. Live sphagnum is a growing plant you can propagate and keep alive indefinitely.
