Aquatic Plant Care Guide for Aquariums & Ponds
Share
Live aquatic plants absorb excess nutrients, outcompete algae, and give fish, shrimp, and fry cover. Most are easy to keep once you match their light and placement needs.
Water
Most aquatic plants do fine in normal aquarium water. Use distilled, reverse osmosis, or rain water for sensitive species.
Light
Give most species 8 to 10 hours of bright, full-spectrum aquarium or grow lighting a day. Outdoor growing in full or partial sun also works as long as the water stays in the right temperature range.
Water temperature
Most tropical aquatic plants thrive at 72 to 82°F. Temperate species tolerate cooler water, sometimes down into the 50s°F.
Substrate and placement
- Rooted plants like Amazon swords and Cryptocoryne prefer a nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs.
- Epiphytes like Anubias, Java fern, and Bucephalandra should be attached to rock or wood. Never bury the rhizome.
- Floating plants like duckweed, water lettuce, and Salvinia take nutrients from the water. Thin them regularly so they don't shade the plants below.
Fertilizer
Use aquarium-safe root tabs or liquid fertilizer for strong growth, especially in tanks without fish. Don't overdo it, or you'll feed algae instead.
FAQ
Do I need CO2 for aquatic plants?
Not for easy, fast-growing species like Water Sprite, Guppy Grass, and floating plants. CO2 mainly matters for demanding carpeting and high-light plants.
Why is my new plant melting?
Many aquatic plants are grown out of water at farms, and they shed leaves while adjusting to life underwater. Cryptocoryne are famous for this. Leave the roots or rhizome in place and new growth usually follows.
Do aquatic plants need fertilizer in a stocked tank?
Easy species often get enough from fish waste. Heavy root feeders still benefit from root tabs, and tanks without fish usually need some liquid fertilizer.
Can I grow aquatic plants outdoors?
Yes. Many species grow well in ponds and tubs during warm months. Tropical species need to come inside before water temperatures drop.
